The Journal Gazette/Times-Courier (my life the last 5 months)

As the online editor at the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier it has been my responsibility to re-design, manage and provide content for www.jg-tc.com. Without any staff this task was given to and carried out by own self. Every page and element on the site is something that I was initially responsible for and mostly maintain to this day.

Excluding advertising; the overall upkeep, providing content, producing new elements including most multimedia content or any other publishing is my responsibility.

Working with the newsroom, I have gradually been able to introduce staff involvement in the website in regards to posting stories and even uploading videos. This was done by teaching the content management system and any other necessary steps to the staff working daily to clarify and explain any questions.

In addition to working with staff it is my responsibility to address site related problems that our viewers or users may encounter.

The new site aggressively utilizes new media and provides the viewer with not only more content than ever before, but also richer and more diverse assets. I have not only brought local video to the site, but have increased the production of other media packages like slide shows.

Bringing the site up-to-date and providing more rich content is the cause for our online sales revenue to account for 10% of the news paper's total income.

Special section pages

Under my own initiate there are times when I see it fit to create and manage a specific page dedicated to a special event.

In this case, rather than flooding our home page with Bagelfest content, I created a dedicated page to hold all content related to this event.

This was not recommended by anyone, but was appreciated by several editors. Some attributes that I bring to the table is the initiative, drive and creative thinking to find working solutions to web based problems.

Index pages

Each section for the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier has it's own section page that is dedicated to content concerning that genre.

These were all built out by me to list all of the recent content published to that section. This includes stories, photos, videos, polls or any other appropriate asset that I see fit to publish on that particular page.

Interactive work

This was an interactive piece that received a great deal of acclaim from the local community. Working with the summer intern I was able to generate this interactive map that linked to around 15 different multimedia pieces dealing with the fair.

This included video, photo slide shows, audio photo slide shows and stories from the Coles County Fair.

Responsibilities for page:

Create and maintain page, build player widget to work through VMIX, shoot/edit/publish video to populate player.

Promote usage from staff members to produce video content for site editing and managing works as necessary. A new implementation of our video player is the use of mobile video that is shot and uploaded to the site from a cell phone while in the field.
